Reading and Writing Homework
Overview
In fifth grade your child is expected to read texts on their reading level each night for 30 minutes minimum. This year, each child is expected to write a short paragraph, 4-5 sentences, in their reading notebook about their reading. They will not write what they choose about their reading, they will have an assigned skill they will discuss in their paragraph, using evidence from the text they read.
Also , your child will have a spelling/vocabulary contract they will complete with the assigned weekly words. Once we start our curriculum, you will see a list going home and you can find them here, too.
I will check reading homework every Monday. This gives your child 7 days to complete 5 days of reading work as it is assigned the previous Monday. I will check vocabulary/spelling homework every Thursday. Vocabulary quizzes will be held on Mondays. By checking their work on Thursday, this gives your child plenty of time to study their work and succeed. Homework is an extension of what has already been taught in class.
**Please check back in the next few weeks for updates and resources added to help your child with literacy homework.**

Homework
Homework Reading Log
Students are to read their book for at least 30 minutes or more for 5 days. If students are unable to complete a night of reading during the week, they must make it up on a Saturday or Sunday. The students are expected to complete a nice paragraph about their reading by applying the skill that was given to them in class. The response to their reading is recorded in their spiral notebook. They have created an example page of "Setting Up the Bones" for their weekly reading log. I have also included an example. Students will conference with me throughout the week, I will adjust the expected skill based on the individual student.
Grading of Homework Reading Log
Each entry is worth 20 points. If your child chooses to not make up a missed day of reading, they lose 20 points for every day missed. If the students miss a day and make up the day in their two day extension (Saturday or Sunday) they are given the full 20 point credit.
Due Date for Homework Reading Log
Due every Monday. I will conference with your child each week, they must continue to maintain their entries until I am able to meet with them individually. 20 points are given for every entry that is correctly entered. Remember! There are two extension days already in their week in case they miss a day throughout the week.
Writing
Writing is completed at school and not for homework. If your child is absent or may not complete a writing assignment before the deadline, then they must take it home for homework.

Reading Notebook - Composition Book-Reading Skill Notebook
Throughout the literacy units we explore in 5th grade, your child will be expected to apply these 5th grade level strategies as readers. We will build our composition books as tools to help us with our homework and Independent Daily Reading (IDR). Your child will bring this home and back to school everyday. I encourage you to look through their Reading Notebook to see the skills they are working on at the 5th grade level.

Lexile Levels
MAP testing occurs three times throughout the school year; fall 2014, winter 2015, and spring 2015. After your child's assessment they will be given their lexile reading level range. This range will be recorded in the front of their agenda. Students must use this range to choose a "Good Fit Book".
Lexile.com
Your child has been shown how to access and navigate through Lexile.com to find books in their interest level and reading level. They can also use this site to find if a specific book they want to read is in their lexile range.
